Arthur M. Blank Family Residences

Client: Shepherd Center
Location: Atlanta, GA
With Rule Joy Trammell + Rubio, LLC

The Shepherd Center, one of Atlanta’s largest and most renowned rehabilitation centers, is a private, not-for-profit hospital specializing in medical treatment, research, and rehabilitation for people with spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis, spine and chronic pain, and other neuromuscular conditions. KMA was invited to provide accessibility and universal design consulting for the Center’s new transitional apartments that will provide housing for families of newly-injured patients in rehab.

The new 17-story housing tower features 160 one- and two-bedroom units as well as unique amenities including retail space, a dog park, a children’s playroom, a fitness center, a library, and several meeting rooms. Understanding the specific needs of the Shepherd Center’s clients and their families, KMA assisted the team with recommendations for universal design features including extra-wide corridors and doorways, roll-in residential showers, therapy gardens, and more.
