Northland Newton Development is a planned 23-acre, semi-urban property featuring 15 mixed-use, mixed-income, multifamily buildings with 800 housing units. The development will also offer 100,000 square feet of retail space, seven different parks, and ten acres of open space, all near public transportation. When fully built out, the site will include 140 affordable units that meet the City of Newton’s inclusionary zoning requirements. Additionally, at the request of the City Council, the project will include an entire building designed specifically for active seniors to age in place. The developer describes the project as “a national model of housing diversity, environmental sustainability, transit demand management, historic preservation, integrated open space, and community amenities.”

KMA was asked to consult with Cube 3 and Stantec, both longtime collaborative partners, on accessibility requirements for all 15 buildings plus the landscape design. In addition, KMA provided intensive input on the design of the age-friendly building, providing guidance on best practices for Aging in Place design principles. KMA’s participation in the design process was also critical to receiving approval from the City Council and the Commission for Persons with Disabilities.
